Welcome to Year One

Welcome to Y1’s class page!

PE: Y1 have PE every Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure PE kits are kept in school until half term and that earrings are left out on these days.

Homework: We ask that Y1 children read 5 times a week with adults, initialling reading diaries in order for the children to be awarded dojo points and rewards. On a Friday, spellings will be sent home to be practised for the following Friday’s spelling test.

All children have their own username and passwords for Active Learn and Times Tables Rock Stars which they can access from home as well as in school.

Make sure you keep an eye on Seesaw as regular updates will be posted on there all about what we’re getting up to in class!

English – Poetry

Our learning objective is to create a poem based on a theme – our theme is Autumn. We have been using our experience of an Autumn walk outside, our Autumn exploration tray and videos we have watched to create a fantastic Autumn acrostic poem.

We have been looking at ‘Fractions’ this week in Maths. We have used pizza to help us understand how we can fraction a whole shape into halves and quarters. We love working out fractions with pizza.

The Place Where I Live

Year 1 have enjoyed locating the United Kingdom on a range of maps, atlases, globes and on Google Earth. We even could zoom in on where our school is on Google Earth – it was a fantastic birds eye view!

Computing – Programming

We have introduced our new topic of programming. We will be using a range of computer programs and Bee-Bots to help us practise our programming.

Design Technology – Making Vegetable Soup

This term we will be making vegetable soup – delicious! Today we have started planning what vegetables we would like in our soup. We had a range of choices then we chose our most popular options. We can’t wait to make our soup!

The Big Dig

We enjoyed our ‘Big Dig’ with the help from our parents and volunteers to plant some bulbs and wildflower plants. These plants were kindly donated by Ormskirk Clocktower Rotary, Upholland Tawd Vale Lions and Midstream Garden Centre. We are excited to see a magnificent display in the Spring!

It was great fun planting

all of our bulbs and plants

Eco Warrior Project Homework

We have been busy over half term with our ‘Eco Warrior’ homework project. We created some fantastic recycled masterpieces, informative posters and display boards. Thank you to everyone for your fantastic efforts. You were all very excited and proud to talk about what you had learnt about how to make our world more ‘eco-friendly’.

World Mental Health Day

Our special focus today is on what makes us happy. We know sometimes we can feel sad or upset, but we have talked about the important things which can make us smile again!

Maths-3D Shapes

Our focus in Maths is naming a 3D shape and discussing its properties. Mrs Lyon has been very impressed with our learning! We have been challenged to put our learning into action – we have gone on a 3D shape hunt around our school. We have taken pictures of 3D shapes and when we came back to class we showed our friends what 3D shapes we had found and talked about how many faces, edges and vertices it had.

Maths - Number Bonds

In Year 1, we love a challenge! We have been working on our number bonds to 20. We have used number beads to help us double check our answers. Mrs Lyon has been very impressed with our perseverance and number skills.

History - My Local Area

Our History topic this term is ‘My Local Area’. We have been researching how Skelmersdale was initially a Mining town and how it changed over the years to become the place where we call ‘home’. We have loved being able to explore our fantastic ‘Skelmersdale’ display within our school corridor – it is wonderful! We have been able to compare changes of Skelmersdale then and now using a range of resources. Well done Year 1!

Seasonal Changes

We have been observing the trees from outside our classroom from September until now. We have watched how the leaves have changed colour. We went on an Autumnal walk to explore the changes in our playground.

Our classroom!

Look at our fantastic costumes! We loved celebrating Roald Dahl by dressing up as our favourite characters from his stories. We enjoyed reading Matilda and creating a new character for the story. There are some wonderful Authors in Year 1!

‘Lost and Found’

This term we are looking at books from the same author. Our author we are focusing on is ‘Oliver Jeffers’ – we loved his books in reception! This week our book is ‘Lost and Found’, Mrs Lyon asked us to create a story map in groups to retell the story. Fantastic work everyone!

We welcomed a visitor from Lancashire Council who talked to us about our historic timeline in school. We created a VAK timeline to help us remember the specific ages. We loved creating the actions. Thank you for a fantastic visit!

We have been working very hard this week in maths. We have been measuring the lengths of different objects around our school. We have been learning how to use a ruler correctly and discussing the different units you can measure length with.
