Hillside Community Primary School

Together we can shine

Geography

At Hillside, we intend our children to know more, remember more and understand more in Geography by inspiring their curiosity, interest and appreciation for the world that we live in. We aim to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments and we prioritise place knowledge because it brings meaning to the locations and the processes studied. The curriculum and the teachers build our children's knowledge of places by making links to places that the children already know or are familiar with and this is either from personal knowledge or what they have been taught.

Our curriculum has clear progression and ensures that pupils learn the substantive knowledge required to connect prior learning with new, as well as the disciplinary knowledge which leads to children connecting learning between subjects. Our Geography curriculum aims to equip children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.’ The topics taught have been specifically selected to ensure all pupils make progress and embed knowledge throughout the years.

We encourage our children to think and talk like Geographers and expose them to a rich and balanced curriculum that provides them with new vocabulary and sticky facts. As our children progress through school, they will develop an insight into the links between physical and human processes and how landscapes and environments have changed and continue to change.
